Stirge Drone

Peter Lee mentioned this one in the Gen Con D&D Q&A seminar. War of the Dragon Queen’s Stirge was an exceedingly popular figure, but as an Uncommon it proved difficult to collect a full swarm. Enter Demonweb’s Common Stirge Drone.

On the Skirmish side, this low cost 6-point figure provides an easy way to ping targets for ongoing 10 damage. Used in the RPG, I expect many a DM will take a look at the 4th Edition swarm rules, and figure out several nasty surprises for adventurers traveling through stirge-invested areas.

A classic monster from the earliest editions of the game, the 1dt Edition Monster Manual featured one of the most compelling illustrations of a stirge in action—exsanguinating a hapless victim. Over the years, how much damage have PCs inflicted on one another, trying to smash stirges attached to their fellow party members?

Dragonborn Paladin of Bahamet

On the Skirmish side, the Dragonborn Paladin is a Rare Champion, able to lead good dragon warbands quite effectively against evil dargons—as well as any enemy figure susceptible to radiant damage. A true defender, the Paladin can also soak up hits meant for adjacent allies; an effective technique to keep your more vulnerable figures around. When it comes to the RPG, the paladin may be the heaviest armored dragonborn we’ve seen, making it a solid representation of your paladin, warlord, or fighter.

Thanks, realmaster. Let's split up!!!!!

Another uncommon stirge. At least it isn't in a Huge set this time. Looks just like the other stirge, but more halloween-orange-ish. I'd guess that in the final product the base will be painted black.
The Dragonborn Paladin doesn't do much for me. The last two dragonborn were so dynamic sculpt-wise and this one just isn't that impressive. Plus I'd like to see an uncommon dragonborn (they are monster encounters not just PCs).

Neither paintjob looks stellar but the Paladin looks better than the Stirge (which is fitting considering rarity). The Stirge looks like it could use a thin blackwash.

I've also decided I'm not terribly impressed with how fancy stylistic swords translate from concept art to sculpt. Most of the time the concept art looks spiffy while the sculpt looks wonky. Looks like the dragonborn is carrying around a clothes-iron on a stick rather than a sword.

Well, the whole part of the article about the availability of stirges wouldn't make sense if the new one would be uncommon. But I tend to rather believe the picture. Bugger!

Regarding the dragonborn, that's a two thumps up for me. Perfect dragonborn paladin - especially with the Bahamut emblem on the shield!

Another Stirge.  Sigh.Â

Another Dragonborn.  Sigh.Â

Although I like both , I do not really need more of either.  A Dragonborn Champion is decent, and its Warband building to bring in any non-Evil dragom looks nice (thinking of Large Shadow Dragons in Borderlands until they rotate out next year).Â

Dragonborn wizard, please. Or ranger. Or something not in heavy metal.

I don't get the big deal over the stirges but I've never really encountered them in RPG.

Due to the clear plastic involved, the Stirge has to be uncommon.  I've let Bart know about the error in the article.

Hi kitten,

Along time ago, and it almost seems like in a galaxy far far away, I threw a swarm of these beasties at a bunch of third level characters.  Death and mayhem followed.  Ever since then the Stirge has been one of my favorite challenges to the third or fourth level party.  Their blood drain ability and the difficulty in removing these creatures from a fellow party member makes them one of the more classic, must-experience, D&D encounters.

Later,

Mazra

Hi Temperance,

Thanks for the clarification.  If we get enough varieties of uncommon stirges, over time we should have enough for a swarm, the stirge, stirge drone, stirge bloodsucker, diseased stirge, etc.

Thanks,

Mazra

Peter, I applaud that another uncommon stirge is being made, this time in a set with (what I assume) will have a more typical distribution for uncommons. It's much appreciated.

Yay for the strige. Hope it looks as good as the first one in person.

Yet another gold dragonborn in full armour though. Is that really so typical of the dragon born PCs that all other variations have to wait for aa 1/2 dozen of them?

Hey, speaking of race/wpn combinations, I noticed that it's hard to find a good mini for an Elven Cleric using a bludgeoning weapon. If it's an elf, it has to have a bow or a sword. Please make a few non-typical options, since there are bound to be more elves made anyway.

Love the Stirge (UC or C) Doubt I'll have to pay like $5 each for them, so that's cool.

Another wasted mini in the Dragonborn. Got way to many half dragons already. It could be used as a Draconian of some sort but already have about 100 of those.

Happy about the stirge

Dragonborn: Where's the love for other non-heavy armored Dragonborn? ...not that I'm overly excited about the race to begin with, but I really don't need another rare slot taken up by a mini that's seen 3 other rare slot incarnations already in the past few sets - each of which has been a heavy plate fighter type.

Stirge: WOO-HOO!!! - even if it is uncommon, this is great! I have about 10 of the other kind, but I don't mind a different sculpt and 8-10 more of the little guys!!

I don't get the big deal over the stirges but I've never really encountered them in RPG.

Most of the big deal comes from the fact that Stirges are a pack-type monster and they were released as an uncommon in a huge set which made them really scarce and drove the price up to around $4-$5 on average. That made getting enough Stirges for most RPGers a slightly spendy proposition since many folks seemed to want 10-20 of them. I got lucky and found most of mine for $2.50 each. Having them released in a non-huge set - even if they are an uncommon - will make them a lot more available and possibly even bring the price down on the older versions.

P.S. if you haven't had the experience, throw a pack at your PCs (assuming you are the GM of course) they really are nasty little buggers for an encounter

*EDIT* Of course that won't stop many places from trying to sell them initially for $5 each -lol

I wonder if we'll get a piece that summons Stirges, or a piece that can turn them into Mobs. Running three of them might be fun; send them out after vulnerable pieces, hoping to get at least two of them to be able to apply their 10 ongoing damage sacrificial attack. If you could hit some kind of techy piece like the Wild Mage with something like this, you might just be able to finish off a piece in a rather nice way (though having to wait too many rounds would obviously not be worth it).

Merchant Guards aren't going to be around long enough to worry about, but, the new Stirge might be a nice way to deal with them too.

The first time I read the article, I ignored the Dragonborn's stats. Now that I've looked at them again, I can see why.

Ugh.

You know, though, I think this is a casualty of too many figures.  I think we're far over that threshold where it's easy to get excited by stats.  It's just gotten dull to see another 30-something piece with a +15 attack for 15 damage, with low hit points and lame champion powers.  Of course, in Limited play, this piece might turn out to be useful (depends upon what else is in the field).  But, as a Borderlands piece, it suffers from excellent competition in its price range (cough--Skullcleave Warrior--cough).

Bringing in a dragon is interesting, and allows for some new warband options, but, off the top of my head, I'm not seeing why that's a good 38-point trade.  Perhaps I need to look more closely at the other dragons...

New stirge is AWESOME news. I may have 6 of the other one but I want about 30 total when I unleash these buggers on my hapless PCs!

I like tyhe new Dragonborn (and Dragonborn in general) but I do agree we need something other than a heavily armoured fighter/paladin whatever. DB Warlock or Rogue would be great IMO.
