| Posted By Username on 07/23/2008 8:29 AM Â I still have my old heroquest game that has some cool furnishings in it.
They are awesome! I still use them as well. Lots of tiles, tables, a hearth, cupboards, torture equipment, ...
I wish they would release something like that specifically for D&D - maybe instead of a Tiles set.

| Heroquest, or Heroscape? I have heroscape stuff, but I'm unfamiliar with Heroquest, other than the RPG from the 80's.

| Heroquest. I think you mean Heroes Quest?

Never tried Heroscape, it has rifles and dinosaurs. | | Greyhaze's DDM Spoilers Champion of a Medium Dog & then a Darkenbeast , Raistlin Majere, Nightmare WDQ25/60, Warduke WD60/60, Anti-Champion of Guns, "Knight of Bugbears", and Joke Champion of Venger. | I finally got my tiles in the mail today... I like them a lot and was able to get most of them into a large tupperware container after punching them out. I ended up with one set of IV, V, VI and VII and two sets of DU1.
I've decided to make an introductory dungeon out of sets VII and DU1, this weekend I'm going to play with the tiles and see what I can come up with. I'm only going to use monsters that I have mini's for too... should be cool after I get it together.
I'm sure you guys have been doing this kind of thing for a long time but using tiles (and even mini's to a certain extent) is new to me. I like the idea of having a lot of visual aids (especially for new players).

| | As cool as the tiles are, I must admit, nothing beats a laminated map and dry erase for speed. | | Actually, drawing what you need at the time, allows for the highest amount of customization, with tiles you are stuck with what tiles you have available... so, not sure whatcha mean there? | | Greyhaze's DDM Spoilers Champion of a Medium Dog & then a Darkenbeast , Raistlin Majere, Nightmare WDQ25/60, Warduke WD60/60, Anti-Champion of Guns, "Knight of Bugbears", and Joke Champion of Venger. | For me, I started with a Battlemat and pens, but found it too messy. I moved to Tact Tiles, but drawing took too much time and my players' minds wandered away from the game. I moved to PDF Dungeon Tiles but had to glue them to cork to get them the thickness and stability I wanted and because I had to print them out, they became too costly. The WotC tiles have been the thing for me. They are big enough that i can establish the larger room encounters way faster than I ever could with drawing. Ultimately, the aesthetic quality of Dungeon Tiles just hit the right chord with me and my players.

| Yeah, but then you're limited by your artistic skills, and having to constantly erase. Plus, players can smudge the lines inadvertently.

| Can't say I have, I haven't had much RPG lately.
But hen we do restart, I'm using those no-slide things like in cupboards.
I usually do blank maps ( I have three different ones) and we'll rotate them through, so one getting wiped, one's drying, and one's getting used.

| We usually use tact tiles for that, but I could see using 3 matts like that.
I picked up the no-slide matt, it's working pretty good for the tiles. :) | | Greyhaze's DDM Spoilers Champion of a Medium Dog & then a Darkenbeast , Raistlin Majere, Nightmare WDQ25/60, Warduke WD60/60, Anti-Champion of Guns, "Knight of Bugbears", and Joke Champion of Venger. | I've got some extra from when we bought our house. I have blue, red, and white, so I'm going to use that for different effects (Lava, Water, etc.)

| | As much as I love the tiles, they seem better in theory than in actual practice. Nothing beats a battlemat with a dry erase marker for speed and versatility. Much quicker than having to piece together a series of rooms or a section of town on the fly. Not to mention what others above have said about inadvertantly knocking them around and making that town center you just set up look like it's been hit be an earthquake. | | Ghendar - Now snark free!

| Unless there actually is an earthquake...
Personally, I plan to use them fro Dungeons, as I can lay out the tiles one at a time as they become revealed.

| I really like them for random encounters over a battlemap. Gets you quick and interesting terrian (particulary the outside ones) that doesnt invliove thought. Plus my artistic talents and abilty to draw in scale is well known and suitably ridiculed.
For transposing a module, or maps to mini scale, then I use my laminated battlemap. Sometimes placing a few decorations via the tiles. | | "Mutton yesterday, mutton today, and blimey, if it don't look like mutton again tomorrer." | Huh! THESE are what people are talking about here?
I've got one of each of these, although it's mostly my kids who play with them. I've never ended up using them for tabletop. My 8-year-old has his own "rotating stock" of Commons and Uncommons (I pull the Rares out to preserve them -- waaaay back when I had no clue of value and he was like 3 he used to play with my 2 Driz'zt Drow Rangers and push them through his Playskool fun slide sets).
They are pretty cool and were inexpensive when I picked them up (like $10 per at Borders).

LOL true that. Battlemats all the way, how else are you going to slap down exactly where that Web spell landed?
The tiles are pretty though. I always assumed that they had been designed for mini combat.

I have three of every set, and while they do take up a lot of space and are somewhat of a hassle to sort through, they are invaluable to me.
The problems of knocking them around is easily solved by using a felt table cloth. It is not *perfect*, but it works well. Felt table cloth is also nice to roll your dice on - think of craps at a casino! :)
And yes, since I have such a mountain of tiles it takes a while to find the ones I need. However, for me this has become part of my preparations for play. As I go through the various encounters likely to happen during the session and find the appropriate pieces to use, I plan the strategies for the foes to be encountered on them. | | If voting could really change things, it would be illegal.

| Thanks for the pics of the sets, they were invaluable in helping me decide which ones I wanted. I've been playing D&D for years but never noticed (or thought of) products like this until a couple months ago when I noticed them on the wizards site (and the pics in this thread).
If anybody is looking to pick up some sets, I'd recommend deepdiscount.com - they have several of the sets at $7.46 (shipped)! I think the Halls of the Giant Kings set is pretty redundant considering what I've already got, but I'm looking forward to the Streets of Shadow set in Oct. My group really needs city/village tiles. :)
