The ville IN. AKA Hell on earth

02/05/2006 11:02 PM
I just picked up this Cavern Dragon from Reaper Minis. I love the pose and the Dragons looks in general, but I just can't seem to think of a good color scheme for it. With it not being a "regular dragon", I wanted to stay away from traditional schemes.

Any suggestions?

He has such a happy "look, I'm a giant lizard" expression [:)]

If you're looking for something a little out of the ordinary I'd go with either green with orange/yellow highlights or a deep brown shaded up to light tan with reddish highlights. Something based around a real-life snake or lizard's colors and patterns would be awesome and very unusual for a dragon.

Is that one of their newer dragons? He looks very interesting, almost semi-humanoid. How about a light brown with mustard yellow highlights?

Pathetic Earthlings. Hurling your bodies out into the void - without the slightest inkling of who or what is out here. If you had known anything about the true nature of the universe - anything at all - you would have hidden from it in terror.

He's from the Dark Heaven Legends series.
The Earthy Tones are what I'm looking for so as you and Zenthrus suggested, I'll be going with a brown(ish) Scheme with some tan and highlights.

A tip that I learned for painting reptiles is that the underbelly is a lighter color than the rest of the body.

I will post some pics when I get home tonight if you are interested....

It's not totally done yet, I still have some minor touch ups to do and I'm trying to figure out a base design for it.
I tried using the dark brown color scheme with it, but it basicaly looked like something that should be floating somewhere[:p].
I added the gold dry brush to bring out the details a little more.

EDIT: Added an indoor pic to help with the color.

Stellar work bassman!

I love that it feels like a "natural" beastie.

That's exactly what I thought once it was done. The lighting kinda sucked so you can't really make out how dark it really is.

Thanks. This is my first real attempt painting a mini. I've practiced on a few others, but this is the first one that remotely turned out how I wanted it to.Hopefully I can improve my techniques and get better.[:)]
Thanks to zenthrus and Cthulhufnord for the ideas to get started on the colors.

It's hard to properly light minis when taking pictures of them. I bet that looks substantially better to the naked eye (the lighting in the pictures is probably washing out quite a bit of the color). Looks like a very nicely done paintjob.

Thanks. You're right about the pics outdoor. reall crappy lighting made the color wash out of the pic . I added a pic taken indoors to hopefully show the real colors.
Ignore the ones in the background. They're my next test subjects.[}:)][)]

This is one of the better articles about lighting minis. He recommends a lot of touchup steps so I've combined several methods. Still working out the bugs but a really good setup is have three lights (I have my drafting lamp plus two cheapy desk lamps) all with "natural light" light bulbs. Put down a piece of poster paper (I use white) and position the lamps until you get minimal shadows. Aim, overexpose slightly, and fire. I need to figure out how to adjust the aperture on my digital (it's a little TOO automated) since I get a little blurring. Overall, though, I've found this to be a HUGE improvement in lighting minis.

The pic where the color isn't washed out looks fantastic. I knew it would look better with a little less splashed light. Great job. That is one happy dragon.

Thanks for the link. I took all pics of all my painted minis and posted them here http://bassman2972.photosite.com
I used a white cloth back drop and I think they look a little better, but I still need to work on the lighting. right now I'm working with only one light so I think I'll go get a couple more to help with the shadowing.

Okay, I'm seeing a microphone on a stand in front of this guy. Maybe some adoring fans in the background? This dragon so needs to have some levels in bard.
