| | Trade is on its way, once again. I've sent part of it to Rakhamon (after he read through the list, saw the pics, and made his choices), and I've sent the rest on to DM5. (DM5 was the next US based trader on the list who replied to my emails.) I realize this messes the lists up a little bit, but at least it's in motion again. | |

| Looks like the shipping costs issue came up again. Shipping costs were the reason why I decided not to participate again this year. I'm in Australia and last time had to ship to the US. From memory the shipping costs worked out to be something like USD$40-45. This was mainly due to some RPG books adding a lot of weight to the package. I was fortunate in that Bert the Troll, who received the MMT before me lives in the same city. Since he didn't have to pay any shipping costs (he was able to just hand me the box) he agreed to chip in about half the postage. Without that it would have been very expensive for me (and even with it the postage was still significant). I think in future MMT you keep the contents to minis or just limit the traders to the US. RPG books just add too much weight and cost too much to ship internationally. This is especially expensive when the next person in line doesn't actually want the books either and has to pay the shipping costs to send it on again. | I don't think the box size matters too much. When you post items you are paying based on their weight. Having said that if you limit the size of the box it will definitely limit what items you can physically fit into the box. I found that hardcover books were the quickest way to add a lot of weight to the package. Maybe if you excluded them from the MMT (at least when shipping internationally) it might make shipping a bit cheaper. | kestrel.ca has now sent the MMT to me, so I should be getting it any week now.
Regarding the shipping costs, the books are the issue. Without spoiling anything for future recipients, the box kestrel was wrestling with was packed with large, heavy books. As I had no interest in almost any of them, they will (hopefully) rejoin the trade US-side.

| kestrel.ca said he sent me the MMT box one month ago. One week ago I sent him an email asking when he'd sent it out exactly, and if there'd been any problems. I've yet to receive a reply. That's all I can do on my end, I'm sorry.

| I kinda agree that books and international postage don't mix well. But if they are being traded ... and its not same books being shipped all around then I guess its better for most who are interested. | | "Mutton yesterday, mutton today, and blimey, if it don't look like mutton again tomorrer." | I have received word. The MMT is on its way to me via surface mail, which means it may take a long time for it to get here. I'm at this point unsure if I'll be able to receive it before I depart on vacation.

Were you willing to help out with the $85 in shipping charges to send it by air? (After I sent the non-desired items to the US for a further $20.) The parcel as sent to me would have cost over $120 to ship to Sweden. It still cost me over $60 to participate in the MMT -- definitely a net loss on my part. There's a ton of stuff I'd have preferred to spend that money on. The other choices were to renege on the trade or arbitrarily decide that I would change the order of the MMT. Instead, I honoured the spirit (and the rules) of the MMT, with the ony drawback to the rest of the particpants being a delay. Maybe you could think about the choices I could have made and think a little before offering criticism.

yes really
YOU signed up for the MMT and YOU signed up to ship overseas so did you think it would be cheap to ship to sweden/austrilia? and if you approached the community and said hey this is going to cost me 80 bucks can someone help with the cost then i am sure someone would. as far as offering criticism people have to understand that when you sign up for this kinda thing you need to follow through even if you are put at a "loss" as you say. | | Proud member since March 26 2005 Champion of the SIVAK DRACONIAN Completed trades: (94) Bad traders(2) DJchuckles, sardal Called shots:Sivak Draconian in DD Trade References Email Me

I DID follow through. I DID ship it on. I DID take a loss. So what's your beef? There are no rules stipulating that it should be airmail (although I too would have preferred to send it that way).
Take a closer look. Go back a page or two in this thread, and I DID ask for help/suggestions. All I got from most people was, "Ouch, that's a lot. Too bad." Where were you then? Or the rest that you are so sure would help out?

| Kestral is correct, there is no requirement for shipping a certain way, only that you DO ship.
That was intentional. Shipping takes different amount of time, and even so, shipping to Europe is not only expensive, but highly erratic.
One of the things that EVERYONE needs to understand is that shipping takes time and after it leaves our hands, it's fate is up to those people and organizations that move the package to and fro.
Kestral did what he could to accommodate the entire package he sent, from which I understand had more than was anticipated. Someone along the line didn't observe the package size limit which was put into place to mitigate shipping difficulties. Which is really nice to recieve, but if you're sending it on, it's less so.
We are approximately half-way through the MMT, which is STILL better than previious years. There will be delays and slow down while overseas, but that was expected. Once it's shipping within country (whether Canada, Australia, or the US), it will move more quickly . . . Gygax Willing.....

I feel for you kestrel.ca. The shipping costs were what stopped me from participating in the MMT this time around. Last year I was the lucky one to ship the package from Australia to the US. I think the cost worked out to be about $45. That's too much in my opinion.
And it leaves you in a tough position. I nearly took some of the hardcover books out of the package, just to get the weight down, even though I didn't want them myself. In the end I bit the bullet and sent the package "as is" but it was a diffficult decision.
I really think that in the future hardcover books should be excluded from the MMT. Either that or it should only be done in the US (and possibly Canada) so no-one else gets hit with massive shipping costs like this.
If neither of those suggestions sound good how about when it comes to sending internationally, the package is split up. Any hardcover books in the package are removed and posted separately to the next person on the list that is in the same country. The rest of the stuff like minis, cards, dice, etc., is sent internationally. (I hope that last paragraph makes sense!).

| Status of MMT from dm5:
as of 7/27/08 I have rec'd the box from Kestral. I await the box from Rakhamon containing the custom-painted figure and whatever he is adding to the MMT. Do you need an address?
As I read the list I should be shipping to one of the following: to get the package/list back in order Bert the Troll - Australia, ships to:
My suggestion is as follows- Rakhamon ships to me whatever you still have, so I can get the package back together Bert and Zardnar should review a list of contents to see if they want anything from the package I currently have (books primarily). I forward what they want (all to Bert) and send Bert my custom-painted mini. Bert then sends Zardnar his custom-painted mini + the item that Zardnar selected and Bert's addition- that way we each ship one time to keep things rolling. Zardnar ships his custom-painted mini and his addition to Grimlok. I ship the rest of the big box to Grimlok- keeping the majority of the weight in the US for everyone's benefit. Grimlok can put the whole thing back together and ship to ckissee.
Yes, that means I will have two shipping charges (BTW- I did not add a book!!!)
Let me know if this works and I'll prep a list.
