Hi Everyone,

In the Demonweb Preview 5, Peter Lee ask what is you favorite iconic large creature? Â

My favorite is the Hill Giant.  Larger and more powerful than the Ogre, they can be quite a challenge to adventurers.  They can also be seen in numbers.  And quite frankly we just do not have a good variety of sculpts for this more common, smaller type of Giant.  It would be great to see one in a throwing rocks pose, or lobbing a huge spear.   I want to see a female Hill Giant, possibly with giant iron Skillet in hand.  If you have ever seen the artwork in the classic Gygax module Against the Giants, there is a great picture of a Hill Giant kitchen scene, with Hill Giant matron in a not very pleasant mood.  And then there is the opportunity to be creative with like a Hill Giant Baron wielding rusty sword and in rusty armor.  How about the Hill Giant executioner?  I know Wraithborne would be pleased.

As something new that we have not seen at all, would be the Yeti.  A few of these for my arctic adventures would be welcome.  Could you see a brown repaint of a Yeti as a Sasquatch.  That would be quite the switch.

OK!  That is my favorite.  What is yours?

Later,

Mazra

This is all we have so far in Hill Giants.  We have as many Owlbears as we have Hill Giants.

My Favourite is still the Ogre, and I clamour for each new one as they're released.  I agree a female Hill Giant would rock, maybe a shaman of some kind.  As a big DragonLance fan, I'd like to see the Thanoi done in miniature someday.  I'd like to see some skeletal Ogres, a priority really for me.  Oh, and mounted minis!!  I'd love to see more of those, as they are all some of my favourites from sets past.

We have 2 Frost Giants (not including the Tundra Scout), all of which are Rare. I'd like to see more of the basic 3 evil giants; Frost, Fire & Hill. With female versions. Ogres & Trolls are definitely more common encounters, but we have many of those to choose from. Perhaps some scrags or 2 headed trolls would be nice.

For me, the most important iconic large creature that hasn't been made yet is the Aboleth. There is no proxy for this one - not even a half-decent proxy. I know it's coming, and I'm pleased about that (although less pleased about the somewhat pointless change of size in 4e).

I'll second Greyhaze's call for a Scrag - that's a nice idea.

I would prefer a huge aboleth as well, I guess the current closest thing is the Balhannoth.

One of those Sea trolls is cool indeed, and more Frosties...I think we all agree that Giants tend to come first in the category of desirable large creatures, especially as multiples.

Perytons may not exist in 4e, but in 2nd they were medium iirc (also based on the picture, unless it's attacking a giant).

One of my best si far is Hill Giant Barbarian, but I hope for uncommon versions of both Fire Giant and Frost Giant. A rare Frost Giant Shaman would be fine. But I expect many more...

Interesting start.

Hill Giants: female Hill Giant, Hill Giant Baron wielding rusty sword and in rusty armor, Hill Giant executioner

Frost Giants: Female Frost Giant, Frost Giant Shaman

Fire giant: Female Fire Giant,

Giantkin: Verbeeg, Firbolg

Ogres: Merrow

Trolls: scrags, 2 headed trolls

Undead: skeletal Ogres

Mounted minis: ?

Grab bag: Yeti, Sasquatch, Thanoi, Aboleth

I'm more interested in figures that people want in numbers; the Hill Giant Baron sounds like a rare, for example.

Hi Temperance,

You know a Hill Giant holding a large bolder over its head would be nice in multiples. Facing one of these is no big deal, but a half dozen Hill Giants lobbing bolders from a distance can create some serious havoc. There could be some interesting skirmish stats with range attacks for these too.

Later and thanks Peter for checking us out!

Skeletal Giant and Zombie Giants would be great too. :)

Hill Giant executioner?? ugh... just please don't put a cheesey mask on him. Why would they hide their identity? amongst other giants, he's just the guy with the axe... amongst other races - he's the freakin HILL GIANT! Who isn't gonna know who he is?

Actually if you want specifics:

Hill Giant with a two handed double headed axe and piecemeal armour would be cool.
Uncommon Hill Giant throwing boulder, excellent.
Hill Giantess shaman.

Fire Giantess with sword, light armour like a dervish.
Fire Giantess with heavy armour and mace.
Uncommon Fire Giant with spear.

Frost Giantess priestess (morning star?).
Uncommon Frost Giant with sword and shield.
Frost Giant with crossbow.

Uncommon Skeletal Giant with sword.
Uncommon Zombie Giant with club.

Aboleth all the way.  I too would have loved a huge one, but if I must then I will sadly settle for a large one.  Maybe they could create a huge advanced aboleth or something down the line.  I can hope right?

My other choice would be a Yeti.Â

Giants are cool and I guess I couldn't argue it, but I would like something which really hasn't been done as of yet.

As for mounted minis, how about some knights with swords or lances (nothing fancy) for the Mounted Paladin to lead? Also there were calls a while back for a simple soldier or bandit in leathers wielding a spear on a light horse.

I heartily second (or third?) the call for large skeletons and zombies. A four legged monstrous skeleton (not dragon) would be cool as well.

I think Greyhze's suggestions are excellent (and yes, we need a Yeti!)

I really don't want to see any more mounted minis. The ones we had I thought I would like and I don't really like them. The thing is, if you want to use one as a PC, they won't match non-mounted minis. And if a matching pair were made, then that would be just ONE matching pair, when everyone would want matching pairs. I much prefer the warhorse and sticking whatever mini I am using on the base and saying it's riding the horse.

I disagree with some of what Corim Danex says here.

Let's say -- and this is hypothetical, because the piece count on a mounted creature is pretty high and might not be possible as an uncommon miniature -- let's say I was able to do a series of uncommon mounted figures.  I'd want to do a heavy armored pc on warhorse, a lightly armored pc on riding horse, and a nearly unarmored wizard-type on unarmored riding horse.  I'd also want to do an unmounted version of each of them.

Let's be frank -- these plastic miniatures are pretty easy to convert.  Once those three pieces are out, I fully expect some customization.  Suddenly, people cut up the upper half of an extra female cleric and stick it on the lightly armored riding horse, and with a little paint -- bam! -- you've got your PC on and off a horse.

People would be less willing to cut up a rare Mounted Paladin, but if I can afforably create uncommon mounted figures, people would be more willing to customize those.

Don't hold your breath for any figures mentioned in this thread.  Unless I was psychic and already had some in the pipeline (which I do :)  ), the soonest that I'd be able to get these out would be the spring set of 2010.

I fall into the 'thats way too hard' when it comes to customising. I like them prepainted and assembled as I failed kindergarten craft.

Converting minis:  too expensive for me.  The pool of players that have minis customized like that is not as large as some might think.  Anytime I consider doing something like having a mini converted, I end up trading away a rare or more worth of minis for it.  I know one person locally that converts minis.  I know about several through the boards.  But not every collector has the skills to do this.

I had some paints I used on some Reaper minis before getting into DDM.  They're all drying out or dried out now, and I am not going to go to the expense of replacing my paints just to customize stuff.

I think it's much better to make the PCs and the potential mounts than making a bunch of mounted minis.

For just about every mounted mini that has been made, I find myself thinking, It's too bad that creature that would otherwise be very useful has a person on its back.

I will review some of the mounted minis:
Halfling Outrider:  this one has actually seen some use.  However, there is no unmounted dog that looks like it.

Mounted Paladin:  I really liked this at first.  But this is the mini that made me realize that having the PC by itself, the mount by itself, and the mounted paladin (or some such mounted mini) was an impractical desire.  The horse from the mounted paladin looks nothing like the warhorse, and while it might be somewhat easy to change the mini's upper body on a future horseback rider, it is very impractical getting just the mount by removing all the rider.

Mounted Drow Patrol:  I would have rather had the lizard by itself.  The drow is way too small compared with regular drow.  There is no unmounted lizard to use with it.

Snig, Worg Rider:  The Snig is WAY too big compared with any other goblins I have.  He's riding a large worg instead of a medium worg. Â

Blackguard on Nightmare:  This one now has a decent riderless version.  However, there is no unmounted rider close to the one on this mini.  Before the new nightmare came out, I felt this one was a waste.  This one has seen zero use.  Too bad the new nightmare has the goofy armor though.  Strapless armor that floats on it.

Clawfoot Rider:  Eberron, which I don't care about, and so I don't want any of these.

Tundra Scout:  I really would have preferred a mastadon/woolly mammoth over the one with a rider.  This felt like a waste.

Griffon Calvary:  Yes, we do have other griffons.  Yes, the rider looks kind of like a wild elf warsinger.  The pose is such a turn off that I don't want any.

Sorcerer on Black Dragon:  I would have greatly preferred a riderless Huge Black Dragon.  I don't want to cut the rider off a huge rare.  Dragon is too small.

Thundertusk Calvary:  We have thundertusks without riders now, which is good thing.  No close proxy for the rider.

Valenar Nomad Charger:  Looks pretty cool.  No riderless version of this very ornate horse.  No solo valenar PC close to this rider.

Virtuous Charger:  I would have much preferred a new unicorn.  No close proxy for this armored unicorn nor the rider.

Valiant Calvary:  No close PC mini.

Skeletal Courser:  One of the few mounted minis I like.  A solo skeletal horse mini wouldn't be of much use as it's too niche.  There are plenty of skeletal minis that would be fine to use as the rider.  Skeletons don't have as much variety as PC types.

Orc Banebreak Rider:  This hasn't seen any use.  I would have much rather had the rhino without a rider.

Actually, I really disagree with this, and without wanting to come across as rude, I don't think it fits the ethos of the product.

It seems that only a small minority of people on the sites actually mod the minis. That's a small minority of the out-and-out DDM obsessives! That probably means that an infinitesimal proportion of the overall market mod minis, and I don't know a single person who does.

The main selling point of these miniatures (IMO) is that they are ready for use - straight out of the bag and on to the battle mat. I think these minis are amazing. I would never have believed that plastic minis could be made to look this good, and the players in my group always lift them off the table and coo with appreciation. However, if we're being honest, there are some metal minis out there that are sharper sculpts. It's the nature of the material.

Lots of players have 'good intentions' when it comes to painting minis, buying the best metal minis they can find and making a bold start with the paint. After a few gaming sessions of putting out the backlog of unpainted minis, most of us concede defeat and head for the ready-painted variety.

I've never looked back. The product is absolutely fantastic. But I have zero interest in modding these miniatures. I turned away from the metal minis because I don't want to do any work with them. I don't have the time/patience/skill/inclination. I'm simply not interested in doing it. I'm an RPGer, not a miniatures-hobbyist. As a singles buyer, if it needs some sort of modding, or seam filled, or a better paint job, I just don't buy it.

WotC has several modes for selling these minis. If it wants to go down some sort of minis-hobbyist route, then perhaps it would be better off selling non-random kits - mounted minis, extra paints and a craft knife.

I'm with Corim - no more mounted minis, please.

Don't hold your breath for any figures mentioned in this thread.  Unless I was psychic and already had some in the pipeline (which I do :)  ), the soonest that I'd be able to get these out would be the spring set of 2010.

I like the hint! Now to speculate about which ones might be in the pipeline - Aboleth, Aboleth, Aboleth,...

There's a stack of great minis there. I was already getting excited by the mere suggestion of the Scrags. Adding the Merrow and that grab bag too has sent me into dreamland. I really hope we get a good number of them.
