| Hey there.
So...I took a break for about 2 yrs, and now I'm back... And is it just me, or is there less people on maxminis these days? There seems to be less new posts in the trading forums, and less posts in the marketplace especially??? So..what's happening? Ebay even seems to have less minis for sale...
It's weird because those 2 observations seem like they contradict eachother...
I have tons of questions because I've been gone for so long.. So I'm just going to fire them off..
a) do people actually think 4.0 is better than 3.5 in general?
b) where is the future of minis headed with the new online components?
c) how expensive are harbringer, dragoneye, archfiends and GoL minis really these days?
d) are they going to re-release all of the minis with 4th edition stats? wouldn't that devalue the 3rd edition ones?
e) should i even bother getting the older minis, or should i just wait for the 4th ed equivelants?
Alrighty...peace, and thanks to everyone who keeps this site going...rock on...i'm glad it was here for me to come back to....even though no one probably remembers or really cares that i'm back hehehe....
Cheers Dudeskis!

| I will try to share my opinions: a) No. There might be a couple interesting things, but overall, it is just a disappointment b) I don't know. Online stuff at WotC isn't doing very well though. c) somewhere near the same. In the trading thread forum, dhunton has a new thread to show current prices she has researched d) No. They are redoing the stat cards and releasing them for free as PDF's that people can print with their own resources. | a) There seem to be basically 2 camps, with very few in between. Some love it, some hate it. I happen to fall in the latter category. Â b) Very hard to tell at this time. WotC's track record for anything to do with the internet is terrible. If they actually deliver on all the stuff they've said, it could be interesting, but the odds are in favor of an epic fail.
c) Older sets had seen continued increase in value until around the 2.0/4e announcement when they took a dive. I'd wager that with a some exceptions that they're not too awful far from where they were when you left. Corim mentioned dhunton's list and I think it's an excellent resource as well.
d) It remains to be seen what will make the cut to 4e. They have taken many monsters that would be considered MM1 shoe-ins (like the Frost Giant for one) and held them back to put in later MMs in the hopes that it'll make them sell better.
e) As Corim said, it really depends on what you want. Older minis will always be useful for rpg, but if it's skirmish you're after, they have instituted set rotation. There is going to be a vintage format in which all the old pieces will be legal once they have been restatted, a process that will likely stretch well into 2010 if not longer, but it remains to be seen if the support will be there. personally, I think with 4 formats (Standard, Limited, Epic and Vintage) that one is bound to get the shaft an I figure it will either be Epic or Vintage. | | Eye dun no why youse guys think im not relly a person im jimgang from canada but im moving to cali as soon as i get a master card -Jimgang

| a) 4.0 is different. Very different. So much so that half of our gamenights are spent pouring through the book to figure out just how a particular rule works or doesn't these days (like OAs (aka AoOs) and hard corners... they're valid again in 4.0, just cover involved). I'm still learning it as a DM and player but for now, 3.5 is still nearer and dearer to my heart. b) How much of the online WotC stuff is going to apply to skirmish? Far as I can tell, it's 95% RP focused so I don't think it'll have much impact. c) The monochrome sets are still expensive, but Harbinger is certainly the worst of the bunch. Makes me cry; I'll never get complete sets. d) Some of the critters have kinda been remade... like the Arcane Archer has a new Elven counterpart in AtG. Vrocks, Wyverns, etc. have all been made anew. It will keep happening, I'm sure, as the older stuff is so hard/expensive to get, and WotC wants to keep their newbies happy. Everything (supposedly) will be getting 4e restats eventually, but only cardwise. Would it devalue the old stuff? Not really because then only collectors are going to want them and collectors are generally willing to pay more. e) I've been trading for the older minis... it takes forever. I'm excited for Demonweb as it will be my first release while actively collecting.
As far as a lack of minis on eBay, it dropped off rather suddenly about the time that the economy took a downward turn. I stopped looking on eBay for about 3 weeks to stay out of trouble from impulse buying, returned last week when I got paid, and the slowing over that time has been tremendous. | | ~relientKitten, Champion of Elenriel Annanole, Loremistress >^..^< Happy Customers: 17 Completed Trades: 22 Crochet Beholder: http://www.maxminis.com/Forums/tabid/104/forumid/68/postid/810379/view/topic/Default.aspx Crochet Dice: http://www.maxminis.com/Forums/tabid/104/forumid/68/postid/807807/view/topic/Default.aspx My trades, references, and flavrs: http://www.maxminis.com/Forums/tabid/104/forumid/53/postid/808880/view/topic/Default.aspx My can-has-want-plz-trade list: http://www.maxminis.com/hw_list.asp user=relientKitten | |

| a) I can't really say it's better than 3.5. 4th edition is a whole another animal. I find it fun to play and run, but it does feel like they simplified a bit too much. It can feel less like a Role playing game and more like a war gaming exercise.
b) I'm not sure about this one. There has been some 4th ed tools that included dungeon maps complete with miniatures. I don't have that much faith in Wizard's ability to get their online stuff done right.
c) I think they have dropped down somewhat, still relatively expensive.
d) Do you mean 2.0 stats for the Skirmish game? I wasn't under the impression they were doing the RPG stats as well.
e) I'd wait for their equivalents. For the most part the re-sculpts have been better than their predecessors.

a) do people actually think 4.0 is better than 3.5 in general?
Some people do. I don't. My D&D future lies in any version of D&D not called 4th Ed. I've also been looking at Pathfinder by Paizo.
b) where is the future of minis headed with the new online components?
I honestly can't say. However, I don't envision a time where online minis gaming replaces table top minis gaming.
c) how expensive are harbringer, dragoneye, archfiends and GoL minis really these days?
Values have gone down since the announcement of 2.0
d) are they going to re-release all of the minis with 4th edition stats? wouldn't that devalue the 3rd edition ones?
Dunno.
e) should i even bother getting the older minis, or should i just wait for the 4th ed equivelants?
If you can get the older ones on the cheap, why not grab them? I'm guessing you won't see 4e equivalents of all of them.

a) Yes, I do. b) I don't think the online components are going to hurt DDM. WotC says that DDM is one of their consistent high performers so I don't think they would abandon it for online components. I think it will eventually look much like Magic Online. c) Definately have seen a drop in prices across the board. I'm very glad i sold most of my Harbinger for big $$ before the bomb hit. d) Unlikely that every miniature would be reprinted. They are releasing new cards for the older sets however - updated to the 2.0 rules. e) if you like the older minis and they are at a price you are willing to pay - get them. Why wouldn't you? With 180 minitures a year being released I wouldn't count on older stuff being reprinted any time soon - if it even happens at all.

| Welcome back!
Nice thread as well, seeing the differing opinions, my take:
a) no, as noted above: I prefer to play RPG (3.5)Â not a strategy game (4.0). I do prefer DDM 2.0 over 1.0 though.
b) I don't know actually. Ignoring everything which reeks of D&D Insider. or are you referring to Vassal? No change in that case.
c) getting harder and harder to find, so you'd expect them to be more expensive. On the other hand with all the equivalents out there and resculpts it's only completionist collector freaks (like) me who are buying the older sets.
d) no, they are not. so n/a
e) your choice. The old ones look different, but there are a lot of resculpts. So if your not a completionist collector freak who wants em all, just check out which version you like best per mini. I prefer the new vrock for instance, and at the same time I prefer the old red dragon.

| A) No, 4.0 is NOT better. I have read through all three core books and wasn't overly impressed with what I saw. I am currently playing Pathfinder RPG which is a sligtly re-done work of the core 3.5 rules which I love. Check it out. You can download the entire rule set from their site paizo.com. 3.5 all the way!!!
B) Don't really know, but I can tell you that WotC is so slow with getting anything completed. I am anxiously waiting their dungeon builder, character generator, etc to be released just to check it out for pure curiosity, but all I get is "coming soon". What do they consider soon? It has been like this for what seems like months now!Â
C) To me the cost of the older minis haven't really dropped that much. Complete sets are still sold once in a while, but they are at a hefty price (about a couple of bills I guess). Many people are trading away their older minis from the sets you listed simply because of a saturation of minis. very often people simply don't buy the new sets and try and trade their older minis to get them. I think you could certainly gather a good amount of older minis in trades if you have extra newer rare/uncommon minis to offer.
D) Have no clue as I am purely into the RPG side of things.
E) It all depends on your excess cash and whether you are a collector or not. If you are simply looking for some minis to RPG then I would say forget about the older ones as they are not worth what they are being sold for. However, if you are a collector or one who needs to be complete in their hobby then I say get them all! I have them all and am glad that I do.
Welcome back and good trading.

| a) I like them both about the same. I find that, as a DM, 4e is a lot easier to work with and that, as a player, 3.5e gave me a lot more options. That said, I think 4e will eventually catch up to 3.5e on the options side (at least, by about the time we start seriously considering 5e). [plug] If you want 3.5e material, you can always check out my magazine: Phoenix Lore. [/plug]
b) Don't bet on online minis.
c) I'll sell you a set of Harbinger for $600 and a set of Archfiends for $500. Send me an email.
d) All the minis will eventually be released with 2.0 minis rules stats. It won't affect the values of either older or newer minis, I think.
e) Get the older ones only if you want the sculpts. There will be a handful of pieces that never get redone, probably, that may have skirmish stats you're after. If so, buy those independently, after you see the stats and have decided that you for sure want it. Then again, see my answer to C) above.

| Alrighty....this was an amazing set of responses...I wasn't expecting to get this much.... and I wasn't sitting here thinking that anyone was ludicrous or out-to-lunch on any of the comments....
Vreck... i think i'm going to nick name you 'power chord' for the ammount of plugs you were able to fit into one post! well executed. I'll decline on buying any sets...i've just made two major purchases on buying on some peeps collections..which is the way i think i'm going to be able to get back in the game... honestly though... starting back up again can be depressing..it's like going to the gym and getting the strongest you've EVER BEEn...then you don't go for a few months and you're right back where you started... man...we need to start a help line... 'don't give up your minis for a chick'.... is there a support group for this kinda thing ;)
but yeah...i've bought 4.0... testing it... it has a different feel... i honestly think i do like 3.5 better though... I was very careful to make this choice because i remember rolling my eyes when everyone got on the 'hate-train' when 3.0 came out...so I didn't want to seem like 'those people'...but hey...we often become what we hate people! YAY!!!..I'm a cliche!!!
ok...so yeah...i'm getting some harbingers and dragoneye, and archfiends... it's settled!
Alrighty....thanks again... and thanks for those people who welcomed me back... it's like a warm, cybernetic hug!... and I didn't even have to give my credit card info!
