Hey everyone, Phoenix Lore's first issue is finally available for download. Don't let the low-tech front page fool you. Grab the issue, read it, criticize it, tell us what you like and don't like on the PL forums. Suspect you can do a better job as a writer or illustrator? Let me know, I'm the content manager and I'd love to give you a chance to get you published. Besides, I really need to get other people writing, I can't do it all. Dave

First impression is you might want to optimize the pdf by removing document structure and removing hidden layer content and flattening layers. That should suck about 5 minutes out of the time it take to spool to a printer (the automatic flattening caused the print job to take almost 10 minutes to spool).

More impressions after I have time to read it.

So, the whole Harpy thing... it's great that this young lady is kinda keeping a role with it, but it's really overboard. A few fewer references to eating children/men and a few more real answers for these (real?) questions would be great.

As usual, all females in the illustrations are either huge-breasted or scantily clad (or both) except for a rogue in one advertisement and the water-logged chick on page 6. How about a scantily-clad Half-Orc or Dwarf female? Or some fully-clothed women? Or **gasp** flat-chested ones? Variety would be awesome. (The Goblin Panty-Raid... at least it was different.)

I'd love to see some spotlights on women who game and are good at it (female DMs, DDM/Warhammer skirmishers, MtG players). The Sims does not count.

I don't know much about other gaming beyond D&D/DDM, but those articles were pretty good. I loved the artwork on the water pheonix and the new rules items are great at a quick glance (I'll read a second time to absorb better later).

My ex would probably love a shot at submitting to this 'zine, I'll send him towards it.

(Believe it or not, I'm not a feminis (at least not the extreme kind)... but I'd love to see the women gamers better represented (without it being slightly-erotic, like the harpy Q&A)).

Excellent job Dave. That's a massive first issue.

Love the scantily clad women. ;)

Igor's artwork is superb.

Hi RK,

Scanitily clad women has been a part of heroic fantasies for longer than you or I have been alive.  Frank Frazetta and Boris Vellejo have made quite a career capturing this imagery.  However, I wouldn't mind a scantily-clad Half Orc or Dwarf female.  That would be quite welcome.  We actually have seen a move to more fully-clothed women in the heroic fantasies, especially in the figurines.Â

I totally agree though, more variety would be AWESOME!  I wouldn't mind a harpy fig that looks like the drawing in the mag though.

Later,

Mazra

All kinds of gamer chicks.

Some of them have their own forums.

We're staffed with several women, and the editor-in-chief is one of the most well known in the industry.

I'm sure that if you head over to the Phoenix Lore forums and add your voice, that they'd appreciate it.

Phoenix Lore has had over 600 downloads.

Thanks to all here who have helped us!

Issue 2 (and 3) are on their way. Look for some really excellent material, including some very nice interviews.

Is Phoenix Lore designed to compliment 4e now or is it for both 4e and 3.5?

Presently, thanks to the current GSL, we're restricted to non-4e material. There are a few apparent exceptions (such as minis 2.0). I am working on some work-arounds, but, we'll see how that works.

If the GSL changes, we're ready to add 4e material ASAP.

I wouldn't mind at all if readers spontaneously decided to head over to the Phoenix Lore forums and add their own 4e translations of existing magazine material.

I was asking, Vrecknidj, because I have zero interest in 4e and am interested in 3.5 material. The thrust of my question is, will there be ongoing material support for 3.5 in Phoenix Lore?

Ah, sorry about that. Indeed, that's all we're doing right now is 3.5e material (well, when we're doing D&D...). And, as far as I can tell, that's our plan for the future as well.

Incidentally, Rite Publishing is doing the same (sticking to 3.5e), but they're heavily focused on Monte Cook's stuff.
