I have not bought any of the D&D tile sets.  I saw them on Amazon recently and thought of getting some, but it appears that the very first one or two sets are no longer available except as expensive collectibles.   The more recent sets look nice, but I don't want to buy them if I will be missing basic rooms and corridors which I imagine were available in the first set, and therefore I will be unable to make a basic dungeon.  Do the later sets have basic rooms and corridors, or are all the later sets which are still readily available at basic retail prices only specialized pieces which are useless without the original set?

Well one is full of outdoorsy stuff(the best one IMO) and another is full of caverns, but the rest are all still really good for basic Dungeons.  Don't think any of them are "too" niche, the rooms and corridors in Dire Tombs are just in a yellowish color.

I know your frustration.

A few months ago, I decided to start collecting Dungeon Tiles. I too saw the exorbitant prices on amazon. In a panic, I searched eBay and found two sets of Dungeon Tiles 1 from a single seller for something like $16.00 apiece plus shipping. I ordered them, but about a week later got a refund with the explanation that the seller had made an inventory mistake (yeah, right). Luckily, a maxminis member took pity on me (THANKS, Teflon Jeff!) and sold me an extra set of his for a reasonable price.

As far as I know (I only have the first two sets so far), you don't have to have all of the sets to build a cool dungeon. I'm sure a member with all of the sets could answer this better than I.

Who knows, maybe another member will step up and help a fellow gamer out. There are some really great people here on maxminis

Good Luck!

I have one each of the first several sets. They are opened, and I am not sure I have the outer stuff. But I have all the tiles. And I don't really have a use for them. Are you interested in getting them from me at MSRP plus shipping?

Hi Everyone,

I am thankful I bought the tiles as they were released. I never thought about them from a collector's point-of-view. They are the kind of item that people would not maintain without the tiles being detatched. I punched mine out almost immediately. So I could see any unopened sets as having some good value in the future. They could become a very rare item. Of course, this is an item that WotC could reprint from time to time too.

However, it is never too late to collect them. You are not dependent on earlier tile sets for the later sets be useful.

Later,

Mazra

If you live in the States, then you can usually find back copies of various tile sets at the bookstore chain borders. Also, if you like the dungeon tiles, then the Basic Game box sets, in it's two iterations also have similarly produced tiles.

Yes, lots of stores that you wouldn't expect to have D&D stuff might actually have the tiles.  If not there's always ebay.

In my opinion it is certainly not to late to start collecting.  I have all the sets and have 2 of set 1 and 2.  I had them in their shrinkwrap and wasn't sure about opening them, but then thought what the hell I could use the extras.  I never thought they would be worth what they are.  When I got these extras for a gift I put them up on my list of items for trade for minis and had no offers.  I guess back them nobody realized what their value would be.  Neither did I and I am sure I would have traded one of these sets for a cheap rare.  If you feel you need to just get a couple of the newer sets to fill out more of what you need.  All the sets have basic corridors and such and if you get more than 1 set you can more easily fill out what you need.  Jump in on buying them, they will serve you well.

I don't use them for every room (I use my tact-tiles), but for the main rooms where the big battles will happen I use them.

Give me more MIND FLAYERS!

I took photos of all the dungeon tile sets after opening them (showing every tile in a set - front and back).

If anybody could give me a super easy guide how to display pictures in a reply post, I'd post them, if you like.

That would be an awesome resource, Michael.

Try this:  Set up an account on photobucket or another image hosting site.  Upload your pics.  Paste this "formula" into your reply field-

img src="http://www.yourlinkhere.com">/img

Copy and paste the link to your pic in between the quotation marks.  Place a right arrow bracket < in front of img src=.  Place a right arrow bracket < in front of /img, and a left arrow bracket > after /img.

That should do it

I have bought multiple sets of every release so far (including 4 of the original). I'm stunned that these are going for such high prices on eBay (or maybe I shouldn't be - it is eBay after all! :-) ). They are very compatible with each other except Dire Tombs which is a 'sandstone' (yellow) colour and is more suited for a desert tomb/pyramid type dungeon. Also WotC has a Dungeon Tile Mapper program on their site that is the bee's knees

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/20061121t

IMO WotC's Dungeon Tiles line is one of the best 'bang for your buck' values out there. $12 for enough tiles to create a 5-6 room dungeon. Right now I could probably make a 50-60 room one without breaking a sweat! I love these things.

I got lucky enough to find a set of DT1 at Hudson's not too long ago for $5. I already had the first set, but I had seen how much they're going for on Ebay and hopped on them. Anyone interested?

If you're going to collect, that's cool, but DT1, as others have pointed out, is hard to get. I'd get two of each (in fact, I do!) but keeping up with them is pretty easy, they're rather inexpensive (as gaming paraphrenalia go)

I use imageshack, and it gives you the img code ready. Though photobucket is better for galleries.

Stil a few DT1 around here - one item I never really thought would make it as expensive on ebay for a whiel. Most tile sets are interchangable imp, 'sides the outdoors one.

Dungeon Tiles I:

Dungeon Tiles II: Arcane Corridors

Dungeon Tiles III: Hidden Crypts

Dungeon Tiles IV: Ruins of the Wild

Dungeon Tiles V: Lost Caverns of the Underdark

Dungeon Tiles VI: Dire Tombs

Dungeon Tiles VII: Fane of the Forgotten Gods

Certainly not top- quality, but I hope somebody will find this useful.

Awesome pics Michael. Nice to see them all laid out like that.

As fas as the topic at hand....
It's never too later to get started. My guess is they will release future sets that will have similar themes to what has already been released (That's just a guess though)
I say grab some. You might find the sets being released now quite scarce in a few months.

You can still get sets 2 and 4 through 7 on amazon for 9.95$ a piece with free shipping on orders of 25$ and up. I would suggest buying the early sets first that are about to go out of print then buy the newer ones. You can buy all the sets in the amazon marketplace (I got set 4 for under 5$).

Sets 1,2,3, and 7 are all basically interchangable.  You don't specifically need any particular one to have a useful dungeon environment.  Even having 2 of the 4 would work great.  4,5,and 6 are more designed for a narrow niche use.  I recommend buying 2 of each if you plan on using any of them. One set of each doesn't give you enough flexibility.   Of course I've bought 3 of each so far just to be a pack rat collector. :)

I got the tiles I ordered on Amazon and I liked them. The material is nice and sturdy. I am probably going to get some duplicate sets to increase the variety of set ups I can do with the tiles. Now I would like to see them make a set of tiles for city streets, alleyways and rooftops to use when doing a quick set up for a city encounter.

agreed on the building/city set. I would like to see 2 sets featuring buildings: 1 of ramshackle huts, lean-to's and peasant cottages for monster or rural villages, and a set of actual buildings, decks, awnings and things like merchant carts for actual city encounters.

The prices have come down quite a bit for the first set of Dungeon Tiles on Amazon:

$23.95

+ $3.99shipping

$27.99

To update the Dungeon Tile sets:

Dungeon Tiles: Halls of the Giant Kings

I like the big thrones, round table and the "pit" but expected more giant- like tiles. What about cupboards? Beds? Those pictured on the tiles will hardly be enough for an orc.
Just like the miniatures set, it just does not live up to its name, unfortunately. :(

Moreover, there are just too many plain tiles for me. This is the 7th or 8th set, right? Enough of stairs and plain grey tiles, please.
