| The existence of the Blue and Black didn't drive down the value of the Dragoneye Black or the Deathknell Blue. So, I'm not worried about the DQ Green's value being affected.

Release date: April 4, 2008 US MSRP: $14.99 Contents: 5 non-random minis Stat cards 2 double-sided battle maps Rulebook d20 w/ custom pip (not a spindown)
Other good to know stuff: The five minis are exclusive to the starter. They will not be included in the randomized boosters being simultaneously released. The minis and d20 will be fully visible through a clear blister. | | Assoc. Brand Mgr D&D Minis Wizards of the Coast

I 'm glad to see the price on the starter set go down so that it's effectively at the price of the Fantastic Locations products.
Hopefully this turns out to be a cost efficient way to distribute new maps.

| I would assume that the packaging will be very similar to the new Star Wars minis starter packaging. I saw these at a Waldenbooks in the mall, although Amazon says they aren't available until 7/24... then again, this is the same store that I picked up a case of harbinger boosters off the shelf only two years ago... they have time traveling distributors or something.

| This is really cool! Nice figures, great price, revised rules and new maps.
Personally I always thought that non-random figures was the way to do starter sets, makes it much easier on the new players, and new players are always a good thing for the game, so the less done to intimidate and frighten them off the better off the game, and all of us, will be. | | Call me: W.N. Ditto and ditto. Fantastic Locations were a bit overcosted for what they offered (two maps and less-than-satisfactorily-written mods). Maps + minis (assuming that the "encounters" insert is removed) is a really nice shift in the product.
Now I'm all curious if the Large Green is a different sculpt or just a different-based DQ LGD... | | Knight Warlord a.k.a. Commander (#32) in only 6 months. Where's my pie? Champion of Dwarven Thunderlashers Knight of the Large Dire Chicken Have/Want List Trade References

Other good to know stuff: The five minis are exclusive to the starter. They will not be included in the randomized boosters being simultaneously released. The minis and d20 will be fully visible through a clear blister. Hmm. That's great news for the skirmishers, but for RPG-only buyers, $14.99 for just five minis that you can't get by any other means (plus lots of stuff you don't want) isn't great. Better than the previously listed $19.99, of course.
I suppose that since they are non-random, if the scultps turn out to be very usable that isn't too bad a deal... | | Champion of the Bodak.Knight of the Aboleth.Squire of Gnomes. Maybe Dungeons of Dread will come out in March, like usual, and then the blister starter will come out in April? I hope a WotC insider hops on this thread.
Dave
It is awfully late. By that point as I understand it the EU will have been without starters for a year.[November was going to be bad enough and Night Below would have been a much better place.] Since we can't get Wardrums ones since WotC manufactured them using unacceptable materials. I can't see this dely doing skirmish much good this side of the pond..
Non random is good.
New rules need to be seen before one can comment. |

| Thanks for posting Lidda. I have another question. You said
"Release date: April 4, 2008 ... The five minis are exclusive to the starter. They will not be included in the randomized boosters being simultaneously released."
Does this alter the release schedule? I thought that, typically, the spring set of randomized boosters came out in March, with a pre-release at D&D Experience.

Wasn't there a time this year when we had several product lines releasing new sets around the same time? This one month could space things out better for collectors.

They're even including a free d20 (not that I need more...). I've been paying $15 for four maps (and some largely useless paper).
Replacing the Fantastic Locations "role-playing" insert in favor of miniatures (at the same price point) is a HUGE benefit to RPG-only buyers. A fine improvement on the product line and a wise marketing decision.

| | Just the minis alone seem worth the the price. If you forget the extras, and value each humanoid at $1 each, you'd be paying $10 for a dragon. That's a bargain. Now add maps, rules, dice. | Posted By gss_000 on 07/18/2007 11:02 AM Posted By ShadowLord XT on 07/18/2007 5:57 AM I think the Green Dragon is just another example of Wizards trying to get more money (Like bringing out 4th edition). As it has been said, people really wanted them. jacksonm is right, they did release a red dragon in blood war. It didn't fair as well as the Large Green in sales (I'm pretty sure). Wizards must have seen that. Along with the fact that people payed good money to get them, they re-released it. Just like the Drow Outpost map. A few things: 4th ed, not even announced, many years away. WOTC wanting to make money: Of course they do. Every new set is them trying to get more money. WOTC and individual singles: they don't care in terms of sales of a single fig. Since they sell by the booster, what an individual piece does on a secondary market they are not involved with is imaterial. *rant on, not directed at anyone* Here, with what people are saying, is a perfect example of customers not knowing what they want. If you look at a lot of what has been said over time people have been looking for 1) a new starter, 2) more dragons, 3) non-random minis. Maybe it's not the same people commenting here, but people have been asking for these things. They give what people say they want and people aren't happy. No one can ever win with anything new. *rant off* Sorry about that. Just I've heard similar sentiments in a lot of different areas recently and I needed to vent. Anyways, for me, I can see why the price and the lack of figs. Sure, I'd like it is it was a little cheaper, but I don't think this is a bad idea or a price. This model has worked for other lines, and I think it is a great one for a starter. It seems set up for a better 1 on 1 play (dragon vs everyone else) than the other starters so far, plus it would encourage new players and collectors. I think everything here is going to be new in terms of sculpt. But with it being almost a year away we'll have to wait to see what this turns into. Thanks for posting that. You stated my feelings on the matter exactly and much more politely than I would have manged
As for this Starter Set I don't think a Large Green is a bad choice at all. Since the LGD was in a huge set it made it very difficult to get more than one of unless you were willing to buy many, many boosters or go to the secondary market. I would actually say this is a wise thing for WotC to do as now everyone can get a hold of a LGD relatively cheaply - I know I alway buy one of every new starter pack. Oh and for those who whine about a mounted dragon - tough. They look cool and it's not like there isn't a precedent for dragons with riders....
