When this mini picture was first seen by myself, I noticed the three little heads sticking up, and I thought, how terrible!  The whole concept of a thin common that other minis could easily stand on was wasted by those little heads that might look neat but ruined the function.  I complained about them.

Temperance, in a reply, explained that a medium creature could fit on top nicely.  My interpretation of his comment was that the heads didn't get in the way.  I didn't see how from the picture, but I was willing to wait and see.

Now I have waited and seen.  And the thin common swarm function really was messed up by those heads.  Sure, a medium can balance on top of the three heads--but about half an inch above the table.  And slightly cocked to the side.  It is quite disappointing.

I felt the same way that you do when I first saw the heads sticking up, but since I have had a chance to play with them, I'm okay with the uneven surface to set another mini on. I guess what sells me is the memory of the snake pit in Raiders of the Lost Ark. When 5-6 are placed down on the mat, the little rearing heads make it all the more dramatic when the PCs are faced with it.
I do hope that the remake of the rat swarm (fingers crossed) will be flat.

The hypothetical rat swarm that I have either already made or I plan to make will be flat.

Skirmish isn't priority anymore; 4E swarms don't have to occupy squares. Still, I love that swarm :) and I'm waiting to get some more!

Speaking of swarms, I guess a creature can't step on swarm, so a swarm restricts movement of a large creature. But if a swarm moves into the center square of a huge creature, is it immobilized until the swarm is killed or moved away?

Sweet, thanks for the spoiler Peter!

Hypothetical Rat Swarm
Beast * Swarm

AC 18
Fort/Ref/Will 15
Speed 5
HP 25
Basic Diseased Bite: +9 vs. Fort; 5 Damage AND Weakened
Formless: Half Damage from melee and ranged attacks
Stable Footing: Ignores difficult terrain (per se)
Reach 0: No OAs
Infest: Can occupy a space occupied by a non-Swarm creature (per se)
[] [] Swarm Attack: Immediate, when a creature activates while this creature shares its space; ongoing 5 poison damage
Hypothetical Swarm: Use at end of this creature's turn: Roll 1d20. On 1-5 this creature gains Conceal 11 until the end of its next turn. On 6-11 this creature gains Phasing until the end of its next turn. On 12-15 this creature gains Insubstantial until the end of its next turn. On 16-20 any creature sharing this creature's space is treated as not occupying that space for purposes of movement of allies of this creature.

No sense not introducing pain-in-the-butt rules text that's crazy to adjudge.

Just wanted to say - this was charmingly funny.
